Ghost Nets Recovery & Sea Turtle Conservation

Luminox and its distributor in Thailand – C Thong Panich – joined forces for the ESSENTIAL SEA MISSION: GHOST NETS RECOVERY & SEA TURTLE CONSERVATION event. The event aimed at raising awareness about ocean conservation towards media and general public.

The Essential Sea Mission event, held in Sattahip, gathered more than 60 participants coming from several Asian countries including Thailand but also Brunei, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore.

On Saturday, November 11th, the participants were divided into two different groups. For the certified divers, Luminox organized two diving sessions in the gulf of Thailand led by Scott Cassel - long-time friend of the brand and ocean conservationist. The purpose of the dives was clear: recovering ghost nets. The area is unfortunately known for this issue and the local Thai volunteers’ Association Save Our Seas (SOS) were able to point the exact area where the Luminox team would find nets.

The mission proved to be a real success and more than 200 kilograms of ghost nets were collected by the team!

A second group of non-diver participants were taken to the Sea Turtle Conservation Center, managed by the Royal Thai Navy. There, Luminox participants were able to learn how baby turtles are being fed, grown, protected and finally released. The Luminox teams were able to release no less than ten turtles to the sea - a very emotional moment for all. Most of the released turtles are aged between 2 and 3 years, while one of them, 5 years of age, was renamed “Luminox” and is expected to return to the exact same beach in a few years to lay eggs.

This group also had the chance to join a coral reef planting activity. Each and every participant contributed and definitely helped coral and ocean conservation.

After a “Luminous party” at the Renaissance Pattaya Resort & Spa on Saturday evening and a sharing experience session on Sunday, November 12, all participants flew back to their respective countries.

By inviting media from the whole South East Asia region, Luminox is contributing to raise awareness on wildlife preservation and ocean protection – acknowledging that it is the sum of individual actions that will make an impact!
